Monet Painting Sells for a Record $41 Million at Christie's New York
Le Pont du chemin de fer à Argenteuil (The Railway Bridge at Argenteuil), by Claude Monet, sold for a record $41,481,000 at the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale at Christie's New York on May 6. The 1873 painting is one of Monet's most significant works and depicts the picturesque town of Argenteuil near Paris, which became a central motif for Impressionism. This historic sale set a new world auction record for the artist. The previous record for a Monet painting was $36.5 million for Nymphéas (1904), which sold in June 2007.
The auction realized a total of $277.3 million and featured prominent works from some of the leading masters of art history, setting new world auction records for artists Alberto Giacometti, Auguste Rodin, and Joan Miró. Highlights included Rodin's Eve, grand modèle-version sans rocher, a 1897 sculpture that fetched $18.9 million, doubling the previous record for this revolutionary sculptor; Alberto Giacometti's monumental nine-foot-high bronze, Grande femme debout II, which sold for $27.48 million—smashing the previous record for the 20th-Century artist by $9 million; and Joan Miró's La Caresse des étoiles, a 1938 work that was painted during the Spanish Civil War, which realized $17.1 million.

The historic Beaux Arts mansion, on Manhattan's Architect's Row on the Upper East Side, was sold by Paula Del Nunzio of Brown Harris Stevens Residential Sales, the exclusive affiliate of Christie's Great Estates in Manhattan. This rare monument to New York's architectural history is a combination of two grand residences built circa 1879, one of which was executed by John H. Duncan—one of the most famous architects at the turn of the century, and the designer of Grant's Tomb. In 1919, financier, and philanthropist, Jeremiah Milbank, commissioned architectural firm Dodge & Morrison to facilitate the transformation of the two original buildings into the 22,000-square-foot illustrious mansion seen today. The 48-foot-wide 27-room limestone townhouse features an indoor Palladian pool with a vaulted ceiling and arched walls evoking the palazzos of Rome; a full-floor master bedroom with a study, solarium and private terrace; a palatial great room; a stately paneled library; eight fireplaces; an elevator; staff quarters; and elegant outdoor spaces.
