Bishop Geoffrey of Coutances, the first registered owner of this historic property, stood next to William the Conqueror at his coronation in the abbey at Westminster. The home was subsequently owned by King John, and Henry I’s eldest son commissioned the Norman window in the main bedroom. Strategically placed filmic lighting deftly accentuates the estate’s singular elements throughout.

On the lower level, exquisite details abound, including massive honeyed-oak beams, a Norman arch, and cotswold flagstone. The main bedroom features a carved mantelpiece that dates to 1645, a walk-in closet, and a large bath and shower. Fragments of 12th-Century frescoes—the oldest domestic wall paintings in Britain—adorn another bedroom.
